What Does It Mean to Be Cultured?

And as they enjoyed their high-priced cappuccinos, one pretentious douchebag turned to the other and said, “Come, let us worship upon the Altar of Books and cast aspersions upon these barbarians, these video game enthusiasts. How much better are we for preferring a no longer appreciated medium? In truth, we are – the best!”
A Modern Fable

Please. Let’s talk for a minute about what it means to be cultured. Being cultured means loving ideas, no matter what medium they are in. It is a love of exploration, of discovery and adventure and of stories. If you want to become cultured, you must experience as much as you can. Plays, ballets, novels and yes, video games and television. There is no superior medium. But there are superior stories. When you are able to tell the difference in quality between stories, you are on your way to becoming cultured. As you refine your criteria for what makes a superior story, you become more so. It has nothing to do with preferring  plays over television or books over video games.
